the full 7 partner, 6 country, 95-page HERA grant proposal goes in today, as soon as I make a few tweaks to satisfy the Dutch research council. End of a bureaucratic marathon.

if I had realized how much of my life as a humanities professor would be spent poring over spreadsheets, I would have taken a class in accounting.

gets a little freaked out when I go to the Chicago Tribune website and find ads in Norwegian. I’m not going to the Trib to be reminded that I live in Norway. I’m going to the Trib to imagine I’m still in Chicago, where journalism, by the way, has completely fallen apart.

can’t wait to be done with the big European project proposal. It’s looking good, but I think I’m having dreams about excel spreadsheets and obscure funding guidelines of 7 different research funding bodies. And I miss playing with my baby girl. It’ll be done Monday, finally.

the most embarrassing thing about being an American is that we somehow can’t afford to pay for the health care of our poorest citizens. All of the other countries with America’s wherewithal managed this decades ago. I will always be an American, but as proud as I am of my country, I consider this a greater shame than even Guantanamo. Fix it, once and for all. Have the courage to care for all your people.

wonders why my money takes a week to get from Norway to the US via modern bank transfer. When I hit the button on my computer, does it set off a chain reaction that results in my money swimming across the Atlantic using a leisurely devil-may-care backstroke?

read Andrei Codrescu’s “The Posthuman Dada Guide: Tzara and Lenin Play Chess” in two buses, two trains, two airports, and two planes, and enjoyed it. Good meditation on the dialectic between art and totalitarianism in the 20th century, with peculiarly Romanian emphases and Codrescuian interjections thrown in. Lovely book for your dada pocket.

is worried that all of the IKEA assembly may leave him with no sense of accomplishment at the end of the day on the day when he finally has furniture items left to assemble. Writing, you can’t sit in, or store items in, or admire from across the room in the same way. Pffff. Luckily, a large stack of flat boxes yet awaits the undertaking.
