Fireworks are legal in Norway for sale two days a year, and for use from now until midnight. That’s all cool, but the fountain we just lit was really lame, for 100 kroner. I hope some of this other stuff is less lame.

Happy new year! It occurred to me today that I am looking forward to the return of “regular time.” Here’s to the snow melting and all of us returning to the workplace in the rain!

Heady stuff — hummingbird-size drones, clones from a bit of DNA scraped off your arm, and hundreds of habitable planets. Yet no one is making a stir about the fact that we still lack flying cars. I would have thought that by now we would have SOLAR-POWERED flying cars. Sadly no, we are still decades behind the Jetsons.

Ashura, now that’s a serious religious ritual. Merry Ashura! Have you brought your own knife-tipped self-flaggelation chains, or would you like to borrow mine?

airplane bombers are really making travel less fun for the rest of us. That Amsterdam-Detroit route is one I’ve flown a number of times on my way home to Chicago. And who would want to crash a plane into Detroit anyway? If there’s any city that doesn’t need to be bombed . . .

Snow Crab for Christmas dinner. We were going to do turkey, but decided to do that on boxing day at Suzie’s, when Marion and Øyvind are in town.

made corn flake/marshmallow/green food coloring wreaths with the kids, just like Christmas in America. Darn those things are tasty. Only trouble was we couldn’t find the red cinnamon candies, but the red M&Ms were a fine substitute.

The holiday season family film festival continued this evening with Hitchcock’s the Birds. I think our 13 year-old is traumatized. But she has decided she does not want a bird for Christmas after all, so some good did come of the cinematic experience.

using sled in lieu of stroller was a bad idea. We both tumbled down the hill. My back hurts and now my daughter may have a sledding phobia.

3 million dollars were recently spent to kill one Aisan carp. Asian carp can almost fly. Numerous boaters have been injured by the fish, which can leap 8-10 feet out of the water. Biologist expected to find more carp in the cull. It was an expensive fish, and it is almost surely inedible.

actually felt kind of bad for Obama getting the Peace Prize. Decent speech, but not a great one — too beholden to too many interests, and really, too much about war. I think he would have rather given it ten years from now, after some things were more said and done. He even threw bones to Reagan and Nixon.
