Snow? No, really. Snow?

What a great day — got an early start and actually got some work done at the office in the morning, had an early pizza night with a successfully Lou’s-like deep dish sausage pie, took the kids to a carnival, did an Easter egg hunt with Aurora, and wrapping up the day with some great NCAA ball on ESPN.

Benjamin had a doctor’s appointment today. His weight is basically in the 100th percentile for his age, while his height to weight ratio is still pretty much average — 45th or so. He’s a bigger boy than average, but his weight is just about right for his height. Jill is opposed to football, but I wouldn’t take any team sport off the table at this point.

I remember when the nuclear clock was on the mind and something like a president striking a deal to reduce the superpowers’ stockpiles by 30% would have been a big deal. Back in the day.

Best beer in Norway — I just decided tonight while sampling a stout. Their pale ale is also a standout. If it tastes like Aass, it must be good.

Steak night makes for good family time. Something about a bacon-wrapped filet mignon, corn-on-the-cob, brocolli swimming in butter and lemon juice, sauteed mushrooms, and new potatoes makes the heart grow fonder.

I apologize for any breach of decoroum caused my comment, which was not directed at the third-term member of the House from Lubbock himself, but rather an unsightly object I noted floating in the men’s restroom during the break before the roll call. I did not say “he’s a piece of” as you may have misheard but rather “it’s a piece of.”

Health Care REACTION: Bill Passes, Analysts Weigh In
www.huffingtonpost.com
Nice piece here from David Frum, a Bush speechwriter on why the health care bill is the Waterloo of the Republican party. “Even if Republicans scored a 1994 style landslide in November, how many
votes could we muster to re-open the “doughnut hole” and charge seniors
more for prescription drugs? How many votes to re-allow insurers to
rescind policies when they discover a pre-existing condition? How many
votes to banish 25 year olds from their parents’ insurance coverage?” All of which might make you wonder — why didn’t they support those things to begin with?

According to Minority Leader John Boehner, tonight the Messiah, the “Lamb”, Jesus Christ, will return to earth and defeat the Antichrist (the “beast”) in the battle of Armageddon. Then Satan will be put into the bottomless pit or abyss for 1,000 years. And that’s supposed to be a bad thing? I think that’s a bonus, really. I didn’t know they got that in the health care bill, must be in one of the appendices.

Oh man, in addition to the feral abortionists, according a gentleman from California, this bill will also somehow revive Stalin from his Kremlin coffin and send him rambling down highway 61, redifying unsuspecting boy scout troops.

I’m a total geek — got distracted from the NCAA tournament and staying up late watching the health care debate on CSPAN. Looks like history is happening tonight — though to hear the Republicans tell it, this health care bill is really about loosing feral abortionists on the sleeping masses to carve the babies from their wombs. I had no idea.

Had a lovely Saturday, gardens and museum expedition with Jessica, followed by pizza night and Up and other family activities. Of course, I didn’t get a lick of the work I needed to get done done. Office, here I come.

Yesterday, when it was in the low 60’s and sunny with clear blue skies, I was tempted to taunt you about your weather. Today, it’s about 30 degrees and it’s snowing like crazy. A reminder that people in Chicago should never even consider teasing somebody someplace else about the weather.

Texas Conservatives Win Vote on Textbook Standards – NYTimes.com

Texans succeed in eliminating the separation of church and state from the textbooks. Phyllis Schalfly and the the Contract With America score points, Thomas Jefferson gets cut. Hispanics get the cold shoulder, and the NRA gets a pat on the back. American history — Texas conservative style. Yeeeha!

Fulbright Programs for U.S. Scholars
www.cies.org
I’m investigating the possibility of setting of a Fulbright scholar position at UiB during 2010-11 and/or 2011-12 in digital culture. The scholar would need to be an American citizen residing in the US, able to teach courses focused on electronic literature and other aspects of digital culture, and would need to have a PhD and teaching experience. Teaching load would probably be 2/1 for two semesters. Drop me a line if you are interested.

Being against a simple majority vote for anything but a Constitutional Amendment strikes me as well, sort of UnAmerican. And shaking your fist and crying about it being against the will of American people, well gee willikers I’m struggling for adjectives but pathetic and whiny and desperate come to mind.
