I encourage facebook to radically change their interface in new and interesting ways which confuse and surprise me more each time I log in. Have they considered, for instance, a persistently variable color scheme, or assigning me new friends at random?

my wife and daughters are awesome. Jill’s trying to make a red velvet cake, because when she asked what kind of cake I wanted (I’m not really that into cake) I just wanted to give her something challenging she could work with. Jessica can say “Moonh” and “Stah” and has been giving me extra hugs all week. Aurora is working on a screenplay for her drama class.

just saw Brief Interviews with Hideous Men at the film festival. I wasn’t sure how they could pull of a film version of that book, but I thought it turned out really well — the way the director sort of de-anonymized the voices in the book, using a lot of long close-ups and character actors, actually made for a more powerful film, and it was just as funny in the funny parts as the funny parts of the book.

tonight we made sushi at home — you can get really excellent salmon in Norway, filleted and packaged on the boat within a couple of hours of being caught, so we used that for philadelphia rolls, along with shrimp and caviar nigri, california rolls, etc. Wasn’t as hard as I thought. and it tasted great. If I could only find a good eel provider for my unagi.

confession: while ebr is probably my favorite online literary journal, reading it for more than a half hour gives me a headache. I want a “read PDF” button. After about 10 minutes, I loathe the pink background (or the green, or the blue). I want my hardcore lit crit in black and white.

Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing | Department of English | Virginia Tech

Creative writing in New Media: Kathleen Fitzpatrick recently emailed me wondering if there were any MFA programs where creative writers could do a graduate degree focused on electronic literature. I could only think of Brown off the top of my head, then it occurred to me that Ed Falco is teaching at Virginia Tech in their MFA program, where they also publish New River. But I wonder if any of my facebook friends might be aware of other MFA programs the emphasize or at least welcome creative writing in digital media? Seems like there should be more of them.

Megan M. Boler just gave a great talk on “Truthiness and Digital Dissent” — some very smart analysis of rhetoric of web-based dissent (such as moveon.org Bush in 30 second videos, John Stewart, and Colbert). Jill you might want to look into her work for the remix course.

Over the Rhine was really great, and the Pabst Theater is a magnificant venue. What fantastic Americana. OTR is sort of weird comfy mix of jazz chanteuse, folk, vaudville, and hints of countrified rock n’ roll with a little bit of post-Amish Tom Waits in the mix.

My friends on Facebook:

Most of my friends are named Bill, and they like reading (the Bible). Holy shit! and they are Cancers more than anything else. 13% of them are Republicans, and it is probably not their fault. A lot of them watched Lost when they weren’t listening to U2. About half of them are single, and they should probably you know, hook up. How can 87% of my friends be democrats, and 13% of them be republicans, and live in 11 countries? I mean that’s 100% That’s messed up. There are no republicans in Norway, or Spain. The swine flu isn’t that contagious. Blade Runner rocks.
